There was fear and anxiety in Kebbi’s central market on Monday, as operatives of the National Agency for Food, Drugs Administrations and Control (NAFDAC) clamped down on unregistered products and chemicals dealers in Birnin Kebbi.
Speaking during the raid in the central market, the state coordinator, Muyideen Abdulkadir Sulaiman, said that, the agency was on surveillance and routine checks on unregistered items and chemicals.
According to him, this particular operation is both routine and a tip-off as they were informed that some brands of sachets foods and tea bags were not registered ” and true to what we were told, we saw the brands and tea bags and we sealed off the affected shops till they comply.
He noted that in the course of the raid since is part of their mandate, the team also visited some chemicals shops and was found wanting and subsequently sealed.
He further explained that chemicals brought into the country both industrial and otherwise must register with NAFDAC, and their warehouses and/or storage must conform to the standard outlined by the agency.
Some of the shops were sealed due to poor storage facilities because they stored packaged foods with soaps on a bare floor which brings cross contamination hence the reason to seal them.
He explained that shops that got wind of the raid and shut down to evade checks and surveillance by the agency were partially sealed or in other words put on hold, he urged the consuming public to always report any unregistered product or shops with poor storage facilities or warehouses for their health.
