Tunde Moses Elebute, a public affairs commentator and human rights promoter, has hailed the number of presidential contenders that have so far announced their intensions so far.

Elebute, Deputy Director, Crime Victims Foundation of Nigeria (CRIVIFON), Lagos State chapter, who spoke to Sunday Independent in Lagos on Saturday, said with the presidential contenders that have emerged so far, Nigerians will have good materials to choose from when the election proper comes.

Among those who have announced their intentions so far, included former Lagos State governor, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu; former Abia State governor, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu; Ebonyi State governor, David Umahi, and Kogi State governor, Yahaya Belo, all of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

From the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), former Senate President and ex-Secretary of the Government of the Federation (SDF), Anyim Pius Anyim, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, Dr. Doyin Okupe and Dele Momodu, publisher of Ovation Magazine, have also indicated interest in the nation’s number position.

Elebute stated: “The number of the contenders gives us many options from which the parties can choose their flag bearers. After the primary, the number will scale down.

“It also shows that ethnicity and tribal sentiments are still very much with us. This time around, I am trusting God to influence the hearts of Nigerians to choose a correct leader.

On Tinubu’s aspiration and his not wishing to remain just the party’s National Leader, Elebute stated: “His age is nothing to worry about. The current American President is above 70.

“His state of health is a challenge. But, the ambition to become president is the factor pushing him. I believe even if he will die in office two years into his tenure, he still wants to be Nigerian president.”

On the transition team just announced by Professor Charles Soludo, Anambra State governor-elect, Elebute said: “I see great wisdom in his action. But, they are too many. However, I think it is a step in the right direction.”
